Why I Threw Perfection out the Window

wisdom-92901_640In my primary school I had an awful teacher that taught me everything I had to produce or do in the class room had to be perfect. My handwriting needed to be perfect, my homework needed to be perfect and as the old saying goes practice makes perfect. And she drilled that into us.

And on that note my social, or should I say mental engineering I have spent the last two weeks perfecting my product as I am putting it together and building the member’s area where my members will be accessing the product trying to make it perfect.

Then I started to ask myself is it really necessary, to get everything perfect?

Something I have realized after wasting about 1 and a half weeks of getting my website “perfect” is that the desire to be perfect traps us and burdens and creates unnecessary stress. And that perfection doesn’t really exist. We can only improve on our best. Practice makes improvements!!! Not perfection.

I believe so many of us waste so much time waiting for the perfect time to do somethings, like the perfect time to start a business or wait for the perfect time to lose weight or the perfect time to learn a new skill.

It doesn’t exist, the perfect time is today, don’t waste time like I did, once it’s done, move on to the next task.

Now, striving for your best work isn’t a bad thing, but when you start to “over – focus” on the unimportant things, like all the titles need to be in CAPS and the sub – heading need to be in bold etc. That’s when it becomes counter – productive, more time spent on an activity very rarely equals higher quality, so not being a perfectionist can actually improve the task at hand.

I’m so relieved to have this stress off my shoulders, let me know your thoughts on perfectionism in the comments below.

Until Next Time. . . .

P.S. You might find this blog post not as perfect as it should be for a reason, the two things I want you to take away from this post is that you do not have to be perfect, and don’t wait for the perfect moment, just do it!!! 🙂

Well said. I began studying Online Marketing and all the training that went along with it, and wasted a lot of time trying to make everything ‘perfect.’ Perfection is not really over-rated because it’s an innate desire we all have, but STRIVING to be perfect and get everything in our business perfect before we take action is self-defeating.

Great reminder and nice post. 🙂

Great Post! I had a mentor that used to tell me “Done Is Good”. As long as you deliver quality it doesn’t have to be perfect. I have seen to many people never get ahead or launch that product because its not perfect. They focus too much on the little things that don’t matter and never complete the tasks that really are holding them back.

So true, I have been guilty of that in the past, but not any more 🙂

    Great insights here Tasleem,

One of the earliest mentor types I had the fortune to meet said ‘take imperfection action’ and learn from your mistakes – which I have tried to put into action each day since.

Perfection paralysis stops far too many people. If you look at some of the things which are being released, they are obviously not perfect. They are however available to buy!

Good luck on your own journey – If you get the chance, drop by my blog – you will be very welcome!

That’s great advise. You don’t have to be great to get started but you have to get started to be great! 🙂
